just finished (skipped the last little bit of) Johnson's chapter on honeybee development and i did not take any notes. the few bits that are somewhat intersting are that intercaste development (queen with worker traits and vice versa) is normal and potentially more common than is thought, the one figure showing the time taken for each caste to develop in their cell, and also that the first 3 instars all occur over the course of a day.
and i guess it's also neat that the food given to hatching workers isnt actually royal jelly, it's a different ratio of the two substances composing royal jelly and contains a lot less sugar.
ok maybe i got a lot from that chapter, but i'm skeptical it's information that's useful to children who are just being introduced to the subject.
