We're super not on track to preserve a livable climate, in a lot of ways. of the 9 planetary boundaries we are over the line on 7, many of them quite severely. so what can we do?
i live in canada. i generally make <40k a year. i live with my parents. my personal contribution to the problem isnt large at all. but i have room to improve, like everyone. and as little a difference that i can make from just changing my own lifestyle, i can still try to lead the way for others. and so i will strive.
the better part of my environmental footprint comes from my diet. Meat consumption in the global north is frankly disasterous for the environment, not only in terms of methane emissions but also land clearance for pasture and feed crops. it's also a major source of human suffering, from the dehumanizing labour involved in slaughtering and packaging meat to the various zoonotic epidemics that i have experienced in my lifetime.
i rely mostly on what my parents buy and cook, not having an income or kitchen space of my own. i try not to be ungrateful, but we eat meat pretty much every day and i'd really like to make the change, for my own health and to be able to demonstrate what is possible outside of the norm.
so, my new years resolution will be to switch to flexitarianism, and in this blog i will make notes related to my journey.
